Chat

The Internet allows you to chat to people all around the world using your keyboard. There are two common ways to do this. The first is to use Internet Relay Chat (IRC). This requires dedicated software, which you can obtain from TUCOWS.  IRC is not permitted on the routed network.

Another common way to chat is to use web pages specially designed for the purpose. These chat pages can be accessed with an ordinary Internet browser. CSN supports the software necessary to create such pages.

ICQ allows you to find out when your friends come on-line, and to chat to them. This provides a more interactive and personal approach to chat.

HotMail

HotMail is a web site that has been designed to take on the role of an e-mail account. The service is supported by advertising, and so is free to users. Of course, you will still need to have Internet access to access your mail. You can obtain a HotMail account by filling in a form on the HotMail web site. You access you mail by accessing a password-protected web page on HotMail.

Of course, HotMail does not support many of the features of a real email package such as Eudora. However, the accounts are free and easily accessed. You can access your email from any Internet computer, so you can access it from another city, or even overseas. It is also accessible from behind some firewalls.

Many other folk are offering similar services.  My Yahoo! include free chat rooms and a Calendar (organizer).

Mail lists

Mailing lists provide a very useful way to share information over the Internet. Once set up, any mail sent to the list will be sent to all those who subscribe to the list. For example, there is a mail list for CSN coordinators. Any mail sent to its address will automatically be sent to every CSN coordinator.

CSN provides a basic mail list service. You can create lists with more features by using a public mail list service such as ListBot or CoolList. These services are free, but they will place an add at the bottom of each email sent. Each provides a neat web page from which to administer your mailing list. You can create moderated lists. An email sent to a moderated list will be sent to the list administrator for approval before being sent to the folk on the list. Ideal for distributing information to school communities. You can also create announcement lists, to which only the owner can post messages.

The possibilities of video conferencing are very interesting. In order to participate, you will need a fast computer (Pentium or Power Mac) with a video card that permits a camera to be connected to the computer, an Internet connection (as fast as possible) and some appropriate software.

Perhaps the most popular application for video conferencing is CU-See Me. You can download the full colour shareware version from White Pine Software.
