The application that opens your document is called a helper application. One particular helper application has become a standard item on the Internet, because of the ease with which it makes it possible to distribute printed documents - Acrobat. Acrobat FilesAdobe have a product called Acrobat which features a standard format called Portable Document Format, or PDF. It is used for displaying and printing documents. PDF Files can be opened by nearly any computer, PC, Macintosh or other. The document will be displayed and printed exactly as was intended by the author. PDF files are becoming increasingly common on the Internet. Acrobat Reader is available free to everyone. It allows you to read PDF files. It is a standard application on MAZE and Teachers' PCs. To create Acrobat files, you will need the commercial product, Acrobat. You can set your browser up so that Acrobat acts as a helper application. When you access a PDF file, your browser will automatically open it with Acrobat and then read the file. Acrobat files can be downloaded from the Internet using FTP, or saved from web pages. You can then use the Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the file. To save an Acrobat file from a web site, point to the link to the file, right-click the mouse, and choose save target as... Acrobat files tend to be fairly large. Pay careful attention to the size of files your are downloading. Adobe files will be larger than the equivalent HTML (Web) or Microsoft Word documents, but the result of your download will generally be of a higher quality.
