Introduction

This document has been an outcome of the IT Thinktank held at the O'Connell Centre in April 1998, as well as consultation with school clusters, regional IT networks and sections of the Department. It indicates five major areas for professional development in information access. It is assumed that other Department initiatives for the professional development of staff will continue.

This plan delivers a priority of the ACT Government Schools Plan 1998-2000, ie "Integrating IT into learning and teaching" (pp32-33). It is intended to complement the Plan for Information Technology in Teaching and Learning, Goal 2, "Develop and maintain IT competencies for teachers".

The plan recognises the necessity for empowering school leaders to develop IT plans by incorporating IT leadership into the ongoing leadership development courses which are a priority for staff development (Goals 1 and 2). A train the trainer model for classroom teachers as outlined in Goal 3 is intended to assist the integration of technology into teaching and learning by focussing on the importance of information literacy in the process of using technology. Goal 5 proposes an IT Coach who would assist schools in developing their school network in terms of hardware, software and management issues; in implementing the department's IT initiatives such as MAZE, access to the Internet, use of EdNA etc.; and in working with school staff to design and provide PD (eg. developing an IT strategic plan, Internet etc)

Some strategies have already been achieved. For example, schools have received the Template to assist them to develop an IT plan and school leaders have attended courses in IT leadership which were delivered by KPMG.
