Files on EduNet computers are managed by an administrator assigning permission to access the file to particular groups of users. Your school should have in place a protocol regarding the locations to which files can be saved. The document File Management Protocol is a draft of such a protocol.

Permissions

What are Permissions?

Setting permissions enables administrators to limit user access to individual files and folders and provides a greater degree of security. You can let one user read the contents of a file and change it, let another user only read the file, and prevent all other users from any access to the file.

Permissions can be set on folders and files on teachers computers (C: drive) and on network drives (eg.G: the shared data drive).

Standard permissions

The standard permissions are available in the pop-up menu of the permissions dialogue. They are intended to simplify the process of setting permissions.

The following table summarises the possible permissions.

Standard permission Access to folders Access to files
No Access The user cannot do anything to the folder. The user cannot do anything to files in the folder.
List The user can list the contents of the folder, and run applications in the folder. The user can see the files, but can’t open them.
Read As for List, with the additional ability to look at but not change attributes and permissions. The user can open and read a file, but if they make changes, they cannot replace the existing file. They can save files from this directory somewhere else.
Add The user cannot see the contents of the folder, but can create new files and folders in the folder. The user cannot see the files to access them.
Add & Read As for Read, with the addition of being able to change and save new files and folders to the folder. As for Read, with the addition of being able to change and save new files and folders to the folder.
Change As for Add & Read, but including the ability to delete. As for Add & Read, but including the ability to delete.
Full Control The user can do anything. The user can do anything.

Permissions on an EduNet computer

To change permissions on an EduNet computer you need to have the workstation administrators (wsadmin)  password. This logs you into the workstation as if it was a "standalone" computer. You will not have access to any server on the network but will be able to change security on files and folders of the C drive of the computer.

Log in as wsadmin. Locate a folder or file you wish to change the permissions on.
Using the right mouse button go to properties
click on the security tab, then permissions

The default permissions for folders and files is

everyone full control
administrator full control

As a standard practice the everyone user should be removed and replaced with the group administrator, and either staff or students.

Groups have an icon that has two heads, individual users have one.

Permissions on the Network

The process for changing permissions on network folders and files is the same process.   To change permissions on network folders or files you will need to have the network administrator password (joe_bloggs_a).  This will give you access to changing permissions on all drives on the network (eg. F: Shared Apps, G: shared Data).

To change permissions on the files or folder use the same process as above.

Remember that this should only be done for software that needs to be available to every user.
