EduNet is the wide-area network that links ACT schools.

Each school has:
A server, simply a computer that shares information on the network
Workstations to run software.
A patch panel and hub to link the computers together.

This network is local to the school, and is called a Local Area Network, or LAN.

Some computers will not be plugged into the network these are referred to as "stand alone" computers.

Central administration of these LANs allows the department to collect MAZE data and to maintain virus software and security. Schools are linked to a central server.

The central server has ultimate control over passwords and access. It is called a Primary Domain Controller, or PDC.

Schools are linked to the PDC by an ISDN line. This linked network of schools is over a wider area than the LAN, and is called a Wide Area Network, or WAN.

The WAN is managed by InTACT, who support IT and telecommunications for the whole ACT government.

Having all schools on the one network means that a user can sit down at any workstation and log in. When a user does so, the information about them, called their Profile, will be downloaded. This can take some time if you are not at your own school

Finally, the whole WAN is linked to many other computer networks around the world. This ultimate linking of computers is the Internet.

ACT schools are linked to the Internet through a company called SchoolsNet.

SchoolsNet provides the service we know as Canberra Schools on the Net, or CSN.

There are barriers to folk outside EduNet accessing EduNet computers. These are called Firewalls. They sit between EduNet and CSN, and between CSN and the Internet.

In a nutshell, that's the structure of EduNet.

Each school is responsible for administering their LAN, and must appoint a network administrator. These pages are here to support school EduNet administrators.

The 'Miracle' Handbook
Anna Quinlan (Arawang P.S) and Heather Wilkinson (Curtin P.S) have created a valuable easy to follow handbook for using computers on the EduNet network. This project was funded by the IT districts and supported by the Staff Development Section.

The Draft Guidelines
This word document provides information on file management techniques including document settings, saving Locations, templates and tracking document changes. Download it to your computer and customise it to your school's needs.
