On your EduNET sever, inside Shared data (g:\ drive), is a folder called Custom. It
contains two folders, Desktop and Start. Anything added to the Desktop folder will appear
on the desktop on all workstations. Anything added to the Start folder will be added to
the top of the Start menu. These will appear when a computer is logged into the network
that is, when a teacher or student is logged in, not when logged in as wsadmin.
Only school IT administrators have sufficient privileges to change these folders. If
you have a log in of the form first_last_a, for example, sally_smith_a, then you have
sufficient privileges the "_a" stands for administrator. General users
can view the contents of the folders, but cannot change them. You should NOT change the
permissions to allow general users to change the contents of these folders.
A typical use for this feature would be to add an icon for a new piece of software. The
process might be as follows
- Log in to a workstation as wsadmin, and install the software. Check that it runs
correctly.
- Repeat this for every workstation. Install the software in the same location.
- Create a shortcut to the application, click on the shortcut once to select it, then
choose Cut from the Edit menu
- Log onto your server. You can do this by logging out, and then logging back on with your
IT administrator log in. Alternately, while logged in as wsadmin, open Network
Neighbourhood, locate your server and log on to it using your administrator log in.
- Locate and open the folder \Shareddata\Custom on your server.
- To add a shortcut to the Start menu, open the folder Start. To add an icon to the
desktop, open the folder Desktop.
- Choose Paste from the Edit menu. The shortcut will appear in the folder.
- Log out, and then log in as a normal user. The icon should appear in the appropriate
place.
Remember that this should only be done for software that needs to be available to every
user.
Other uses might include:
 | Creating a drop-box for submission of items for the newsletter
Place a folder in the desktop with permissions set to Add. Anyone will be able to drop a
file into the folder, but only selected users will be able to read them |
 | Create a folder for publishing school news items
Place a folder on the desktop with the permissions set to Read. Users will be able to
access, but not change the contents. Place the daily news into this folder. |
 | Place the IT lab/Hall/Craft Room booking sheet in the Start menu, with permissions
restricted to teachers. Staff will be able to check availability from their computer. |
