File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

FTP | Telnet

File Transfer is the workhorse of the Internet. It allows transfer of large files such as applications or documents from one computer to another.

Files can be transferred in both directions. You can upload files from your computer the Internet, or you can download files from the Internet to your computer.

Try one of these sites.

The CSN FTP Site site is provided free of any download cost to those who are registered with CSN. It contains recommended versions of Internet software.

TUCOWS is a large, local site which contains a wide range of software. It also provides some information and a rating (out of a possible five cows) for each one.

To download some software from an FTP site, click gust click on the link. The browser will prompt you with a save dialogue box, so that you can save the file somewhere. Create a folder to save your downloads in, so that you can keep track of them.

The download will probably be saved in as a compressed file. On a Windows computer, it will probably be a .zip file. On a Macintosh, it will most probably be a StuffIt file. The browser will save the file, then automatically de-compress it.

The file you find on your computer will probably be an installer application. Running this application will install the Download onto your computer.

Here are the steps involved in downloading using a browser:

locate the file you want to download.
click on it to start the download. The browser will:
ask you were to save the file
download and save the compressed file
open the decompression application and decompress the download, creating an installer application
locate the installer application on your computer and run it to install the new software
run your new software.

You can also use dedicated software for FTP. on a PC, you may use WS_FTP or CuteFTP. On a Macintosh, you would use Fetch. These dedicated applications allow you to upload software as well as download. They can be used to put Web pages you have written onto the Internet.

Telnet

FTP | Telnet

Telnet is another Internet workhorse. It allows a user at one computer to use another computer on the Internet as if they were sitting at it. For example, you can access a library catalogue as if you were in the library building.
Telnet will run from your browser as a full-screen application. Entering a telnet address will start a telnet application (usually Trmptel for windows computers). Telnet sessions use simple, text-based screens.

Try this telnet site: library.canberra.edu.au
Hytelnet is an important tool for working with Telnet.
