Installing FrontPage on an EduNet Workstation

FrontPage can be installed on an EduNet workstation provided that you have the workstation administrators (wsadmin)  password. This logs you into the workstation as if it was a "standalone" computer. You will not have access to any server on the network, however, you will still have Internet access.

Log in as wsadmin. When you insert the FrontPage disk the installation program will load automatically. Follow the instructions for a default installation. You can also install Image Composer at this stage. There is no need to restart the computer between installations.

By default, you will  install the Personal Web Server. This will make managing your webs easier, and allow you to access them from other computers on the network.

FrontPage will not function correctly until you have changed some permission settings. Staff Development offers courses on Networking which will provide more information about permissions.

For FrontPage to function correctly, you should give full access to the typical user for both the FrontPage folder and the FrontPage Webs folder.

  1. Open your c:\ drive and locate the folder FrontPage Webs.fpperm.gif (11040 bytes)
  2. Right-click on the folder, and select  Properties from the bottom of the pop-up menu. The folder properties dialogue will appear.
  3. Click on the Security tab, then on the Permissions button.
  4. Click on Everyone, and select Full control from Type of Access.
  5. Click on Replace Permissions on Sub-directories. This will grant full control to anyone using the computer.
  6. Click on OK.

You should now repeat this process with the folder Microsoft FrontPage which you should find in the Program Files folder.

Note that this gives permission for anyone using the computer to access the files on your webs. You may wish to vary this for a computer to which others have access.
