Uploading School Web Sites to CSN

Canberra Schools on the Net are the Service Provider (SP) selected by DECS to provide a site on the Internet to which ACT schools can uploaded  web pages.

In order to upload your web, you will need :

your user name and password. These are provided by CSN. It is the same as your CSN Admin password and username.
A computer with Internet access, loaded with FrontPage.

The web address for your site will be http://www.schoolname.act.edu.au were you replace schoolname with your schools  name. For example, Richardson Primary School can be found at http://www.richardsonps.act.edu.au/

Names

Sometimes the default name for a home page in FrontPage is Default.htm. This name will not be recognised by CSN's server. It is therefor vital that you re-name this page to index.htm. This is done by right-clicking on the icon called Default.htm in FrontPage Explorer, selecting rename from the pop-up menu, and typing the new name. FrontPage will automatically update all your links to this page.

If your home page is already called index.htm, then all is well.

Finish your site

Before you start to upload, you must save any changes to your web pages. In FrontPage Editor, choose Save All from the File menu. Better still, close FrontPage Editor completely before you publish.

After you're done

In order for people to find your site, you need to advertise it. For starters, you should put its address on all your correspondence. Tell your members about it.

You should also let some key search engines, such as EdNA, AltaVista and Yahoo know about your site. A good way to do this is to let a service such as Submit It! Free do the work for you. You can find Submit It! Free at http://www.siteowner.com/. It will announce a Web page to seven search engines, Excite, HotBot, Lycos, AltaVista, InfoSeek, NetFind and WebCrawler. You might like to visit Yahoo Australia, http://www.yahoo.com.au/docs/info/include.html, and submit there as well. You should definitely submit it to EdNA.

Submitting is simply a matter of providing the search engine with your web sites address. Try it - you will make it much easier for folk to find your site.

You should also make sure that your site is linked from the CSN pages. Contact CSN help.

Publishing for the first time…

When you are ready to upload, click on the Publish button in FrontPage Explorer. The Publish dialogue will appear.

Next, you will need to provide an address for your site. Click on the button More Webs.

The Publish FrontPage web dialogue will appear. (Notice the option that allows you to publish changed pages only - this saves uploading any pages that haven't changed since last published. Turn this off if you want to publish your whole site again). Type in your schools whole web address, in our case http://www.occ.act.edu.au. Click on OK. wpe2.jpg (15365 bytes)
The computer will open up the Web Publishing Wizard. This may take a few seconds.

Enter the FTP server name. This is the school's domain name, for example  occ.act.edu.au. Press Tab to move to the directory path field, and type www. This is the directory, or folder, at CSN in which your files will be kept.  Click on Next.

Type in your user name. Press tab to move to the password field, and enter your password. Click on Finish.
Your computer will respond by displaying the dialogue box Transferring Files. It will verify the FTP connection, which should take only a few seconds, and then transfer the files.
Check that the files have transferred correctly by looking at them with a web browser. Point the browser to your address on http://ww.spirit.net.au. If they appear not to have changed, try holding down the Shift key on your keyboard and clicking on reload or refresh with the mouse.

Publishing again

Once you have gone through this process on your own computer, FrontPage will remember the information you have provided. When you publish again, you will be asked only for your user name and password.

Home Pages

CSN allows schools to give home page space to teachers and classes to publish on the Internet. This is done when setting up an e-mail account on CSN See you CSN administrator for details. The site's address will be of the form http://www.schoolname.act.edu.au/home/name were name is replaced by your email alias.

If you have a space for a home page, the instructions below will apply to you as well as to your school. You should enter the full address of your site.

For example, this page is on a home page site named itpd on the O'Connell Centre's domain (http://www.occ.act.edu.au). This is why it has the address http://www.occ.act.edu.au/home/itpd

To upload to such a site, follow the instructions above, but use the whole web address for your site in the Publish FrontPage web dialogue, and your email username and password. You should also remove the www from the Directory Path.
