Web-Page Workshop Vs Starting with FrontPageStaff Development offers two courses on using FrontPage. One lasts for three hours and costs $60, the other lasts two days and costs $150. What is the difference between them? Starting with FrontPageOffice folk publish their pages to the DECS website, which has a format and style specified by the Department. They cannot take advantage of FrontPage components such as shared borders, themes and navigation bars. They do not have access to the entire web site, and so cannot make use of many of the features of FrontPage Explorer. Participants in this course will be shown how to use FrontPage Editor to create and edit web pages, graphics, hyperlinks and tables. This course is intended for those modifying the DECS webpage templates. Web-Site WorkshopThe two-day workshop is intended for schools who publish their pages to Canberra Schools on the Net (CSN). At the end of the workshop the school will have structured a web site, not just a web page. The workshop format allows for maximum flexibility in the content, so that individual schools can work on their pages, not just learn about FrontPage. The course will look in detail at the Navigation view in FrontPage Explorer, and how this is used to create navigation bars and shared borders. These features considerably reduce the work needed to maintain a web site. The course also offers to opportunity for those with a knowledge of graphics to create a distinctive theme for their web site. All of this is outside the scope of Starting with FrontPage It is strongly recommended that schools send two or three individuals to this course, so that the work of managing a web site can be distributed equitably. On-line supportMicrosoft has produced a step-by-step on-line guide designed for teachers, called In and Out of the Classroom with Microsoft® FrontPage® 98 . These are available to download in Word 97 format, or to use live on the web. Unfortunately the Word version is formatted for US Letter pages, and does not take well to translating into A4 - it looses some of the details on the borders. They also provide a detailed description of FrontPage. The official web sites for companion software, Microsoft Image Composer (MIC) and Microsoft GIF Animator provide extensive support. You can edit and create FrontPage themes using the Theme Designer. The University of Kansas Medical Centre offers a web development resource guide which focuses on FrontPage. As well as a good on-line tutorial, it offers extensive tips and links. |
